Request a Translator or Interpreter

Please note:

  • DEADLINES AND TIMINGS

We can only accept requests made a minimum of 48 hours (2 working days) in advance. When we find a suitable match for your request, we will contact you immediately. You do not need to send follow-up requests. In the case that we are unable to find somebody suitable, we will let you know 24 hours before your appointment at the latest.

  • OUR VOLUNTEER INTERPRETERS

All of our translators and interpreters are volunteers who have no professional training.

  • CANCELLATIONS

If your appointment is cancelled or rescheduled, or if you have found an alternative interpreter and no longer require the services of TranslAid, please let us know immediately.

  • WHERE CAN WE HELP?

We only accept requests for appointments which take place within the boundaries of Munich's S-Bahn service. We do, however, accept telephone appointments. These are of course not restricted by the S-Bahn service.

  • WHAT CAN WE HELP WITH?

We provide translators for various types of appointment, including but not limited to: appointments specific to the asylum process or other legal proceedings, appointments at the Youth Welfare Office and the Registry Office, appointments about employment and accommodation, medical appointments, and unofficial translations of documents. Please get in touch with us and we will try our best to find a suitable volunteer for your appointment, whatever it is about. This list is not exhaustive and we are very much open to accepting and supporting new appointments which are not listed above.

  • WHICH LANGUAGES DO WE OFFER?

Here you will find a list of the languages for which we currently provide translators and interpreters.

Safety Measures against the Coronavirus

Where possible, we ask that you submit requests for appointments that can be supported through digital means. If translation via telephone or video-call is possible, we ask that you submit your request accordingly. We ask this so that we can best protect our clients and our volunteers from the virus.

In accordance with the current guidance, we are, however, still sending our volunteer translators to events which are taking place face to face. This is however subject to change.

When submitting your request, please state whether the appointment will take place face to face or over the phone.

This information is necessary to help us choose a suitable volunteer translator. If you would like to share any additional information, please submit it in our Do you have any questions? section.
(Only numers, no special characters or letters!) The phone number is important so that the volunteer translator can contact the client in the case that they cannot find the location of the appointment or must discuss something in advance.
We are usually more likely to be able to find you a translator if your appointment happens later in the day, i.e. late afteroon or early evening. Please try to organise your appointment accordingly, where possible.
Please describe as accurately and specifically as possible what your appointment is about and what it will involve. With this information the Translator can prepare in advance. (Writing, for example, just "Doctor's Appointment" or "Appointment with the Orthopaedist" is unfortunately insufficient).
Please state an address and also an exact meeting place, where the Translator can meet the you.
Recently, it has been easier to find suitable volunteers to help translate when they do not need to be physically present at the appointment.
Please note that it is harder to find translators for longer appointments. It is also important to note that the translator is only available for the pre-agreed duration of time and often are unable to stay overtime due to other, pre-existing commitments.
The likelihood of finding a suitable match for your request is unfortunately reduced if you have a particular gender preference.
If you provide TranslAid with personal information, TranslAid will only use this data to answer your queries or to arrange a volunteer translator to accompany you to your disclosed appointment(s). Our clients’ personal information remains confidential. The information will only be passed on to third parties or otherwise shared if it is necessary for the purpose of the interpreting request or the client has otherwise given prior consent. No information will be passed onto the authorities. The client has the right to withdraw their consent at any time. To withdraw consent to the storing of your personal information, please email datenschutz@arrivalaid.org. Any information which has previously been saved will be deleted if you withdraw your consent, if the information is no longer required, or if storing the information is not permitted for legal reasons. In the case of withdrawing consent, the information will be deleted as quickly as possible from the TranslAid database. In addition, TranslAid will ensure that those with whom the data was shared also delete the information promptly. Please note that TranslAid will not be able to provide further service or support to the client once the information has been erased. We hereby confirm that the client is aware that: their personal data will be processed and stored in the TranslAid database (such as their surname, first name, and language), that they have been suitably informed about the procedure for revoking their consent, and that TranslAid will treat the entrusted information with care and confidentiality. Furthermore, we will not disclose the contact details of TranslAid volunteers to third parties, and we will only contact them with regards to the assignment in question or for consultation purposes. It is not permitted to save or use the personal information of our volunteers for any purpose except the case to which they have been assigned.
